Oh Deer!

One of my favorite series are the Governor Boxes by Boots Tex. He always gives you a history lesson about the Governor as well as an image that is amazing. We made our way to Liberty, Tx to stamp in one of these Governor boxes and explore the cemetery where he is interned. There are two small cemeteries at this location both of which are private, but they have access from the side of the road, and you are not trespassing when you retrieve the box.
Thankfully, the box is on the outside of the fence and easily accessed, since you no longer can enter the cemeteries. As I approached the tree where the box was located, I looked down the fence,(which had spikes on top) and saw a deer hanging by his back leg hooked on one of the spikes. Very strange indeed! The smell wasn't too pleasant, but it was a small sacrifice to get the image of another Governor of Texas! I am always amazed at the things I see when letterboxing. It's always an adventure!

Texas Tomboys

It is exciting to be in a new area, where there are letterboxes to be found! Several years ago, Hurricanes Rita and Ike blew onto the Texas Coast and made their way inland causing damage that is still visible today. For letterboxing, this meant that trails were closed (whole parks in some areas) and landmarks and boxes were destroyed. Mother Nature was not nice. Memorial Park in Houston was especially hit hard, but boxes are starting to be replaced and the game is back on! I began to print out clues near me here in Beaumont, knowing they may not be there anymore, but just had to try. TX Tomboy is a box dedicated to a special athlete who was way ahead of her time. Mildred Ella Didrikson Zaharias, affectionately known as "Babe" was quite a pioneer as an athlete. She excelled in Track and Field, Tennis and Golf. With clue in hand, I drove over to look for this box by Silver Eagle. Some of the landmarks are missing, but the box is still there. WooHoo!! I looked for two more boxes, but sadly they were missing. The trees and bushes mentioned in the clues are gone. The weather was great, and I have another image for my logbook. It's so nice to be able to get out there and box again!

We are very happy to be back together full time once again, able to spend time together. I have already been out on the trails stamping in boxes, and enjoying life! I will post about my adventures in the next couple of days so stay tuned!
